Tottenham host Wolves on Sunday in the Premier League, and the head-to-head record between the two sides indicates it is a fixture which could go both ways.
Alongside Chelsea and Arsenal, Wolves are the only other Premier League side that Ange Postecoglou is yet to win against.
Beyond Postecoglou’s tenure as Spurs manager, Wolves have still caused Tottenham difficulties. During the last ten fixtures between the two sides, Wolves have secured wins against Postecoglou, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
Tottenham record vs Wolves:
Wins: 4
Draws: 1
Losses: 5
Goals for: 14
Goals against: 15
Now under the management of Vitor Pereira, Wolves present a different challenge to last season. This will be a small blessing as former manager Gary O’Neil has beaten Tottenham on 3 of the 4 occasions he has managed against them.
That being said, Pereira’s ideology involves setting up structurally organised defences with counter-attacking structures designed for each specific opponent.
If opponents exert all of their energy in stopping Spurs from playing, it often proves to be the sort of games in which Tottenham struggle most.
Exacerbated by a lack of available rotation and fitness, Spurs could be facing a similar problem to previous games against Wolves.
Since Wolverhampton Wanderers returned to the Premier League, they have faced Tottenham on 13 occasions. Heung-min Son has featured in 12 of these 13 but has never managed to score against them.
Son has failed to make a goal contribution against Wolves since 2019 after he assisted a Harry Kane goal. However, only Son and Dele are Premier League Spurs players who have contributed more than 1 assist each against Wolves.
Goals and wins against Wolves appear to be some of Tottenham’s hardest earned. The team will need to once again work collectively and likely (somehow) commit more than they have to give to claim a result.
