Tottenham Hotspur may have just made a huge transfer decision after closely monitoring the performance of one La Liga star over the last month.
Spurs know that they can sign Johnny Cardoso for £25m next summer, with the Lilywhites acquiring the option last summer as part of the deal to take Giovani Lo Celso back to Real Betis.
In the meantime, the USA international is continuing to impress at the Benito Villamarin and this has reportedly led to the likes of Atletico Madrid and AC Milan circling over him ahead of the January window.
With Tottenham’s option only valid for next summer, they would have to negotiate with Betis and potentially get into a bidding war with other clubs if they wish to sign the 23-year-old in the upcoming transfer window.
It turns out this is exactly what Tottenham plan on doing, with TBR Football revealing that the Lilywhites are ready to pounce on the midfielder in January instead of waiting until the summer.
In fact, the outlet alleges that the Premier League side have already opened talks with Betis over a January deal for Cardoso, with the Lilywhites currently exploring a mid-season deal.
It is explained that Ange Postecoglou feels that the American’s mobility and presence as a holding midfielder would add something that Spurs are currently lacking in the middle of the park.
The publication claims that Tottenham’s scouts have watched Cardoso in action in five of his last six matches as they consider an early move.
While a lot has been made of the players that Tottenham have been missed in defence, Rodrigo Bentancur has arguably been a bigger miss for Postecoglou’s side over the last month.
Without the Uruguayan, Spurs have simply been unable to progress the ball through midfield, with Bissouma and Pape Sarr both having big limitations in possession.
That is potentially what has convinced Postecoglou to add another number six to the squad in January, with some sources suggesting that the Lilywhites are even prepared to offload the Mali international in January.
