Tottenham Hotspur’s quest for a first major trophy in over 15 years has been dealt a significant setback, with two key players ruled out of the first leg of their eagerly anticipated Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Liverpool.
Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur’s charismatic Australian manager, boldly declared earlier in the season that he often achieves success in his second year at the helm of a club, and while the timeline might be ambitious, his Tottenham side appear determined to make it a reality.
On Thursday, December 19, the Lilywhites triumphed in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
The match was not without its dramatic twists, with veteran goalkeeper Fraser Forster enduring a torrid evening that saw him gift Manchester United two goals due to uncharacteristic mistakes.
Nevertheless, Tottenham’s attacking verve and unrelenting spirit were enough to seal their place in the semi-finals, edging them closer to a shot at silverware not achieved since their 2007-08 Carabao Cup triumph over Chelsea.
Tottenham now face Liverpool over two legs, with the first to be played at their home ground in early January and the return leg at Anfield in early February.
However, their preparations have been overshadowed by a significant setback that threatens to disrupt their midfield dynamics for the crucial first encounter.
Tottenham’s celebrations after their quarter-final victory were quickly tempered by the news that James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr will both miss the opening leg against Liverpool.
The pair received their second yellow cards of the tournament during the clash with Manchester United, triggering automatic one-match bans under Carabao Cup rules.
As such, Maddison, the creative hub of Tottenham’s midfield, and Sarr, a burgeoning talent who has impressed this season, will be forced to sit out the first leg at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The timing of these suspensions could not be worse for Ange Postecoglou, whose team is already contending with an extensive injury list.
Despite the challenges posed by Maddison and Sarr’s absence, Tottenham will be buoyed by the return of Rodrigo Bentancur, who will have completed his seven-match suspension in time for the semi-finals.
The Uruguayan midfielder provides a natural replacement for Sarr in the engine room, offering both defensive stability and attacking impetus.
As for Maddison’s absence, Postecoglou has versatile options in Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski, both of whom could be deployed in an advanced midfield role to fill the creative void.
Moreover, Tottenham fans will be hopeful of seeing key defenders Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies return to action, as well as forward Richarlison, whose recovery from injury is progressing.
While first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains sidelined with an ankle fracture until at least February, the semi-finals offer an opportunity for Postecoglou to demonstrate his tactical nous and deliver on his promise.
Regardless of the challenges, Tottenham’s determination to lift the EFL Cup and end their long wait for a major trophy remains undiminished.
