An update has emerged about the plans of one Qatari billionaire, and it is not good news for Spurs fans who were hoping for a takeover from Sheikh Jassim and the Middle East.
Spurs are currently seeking minority investment, with the North London club thought to be ready to sell around 25 per cent stake in the club.
According to reports, Newcastle’s former minority owner Amanda Staveley has held talks with Daniel Levy, while the likes of Liberty Media and MSP Sports Capital have also shown interest in the North London side.
It is unclear if any of these talks have progressed and if Spurs are indeed close to some investment money coming into the club.
An update has now emerged regarding Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, a Qatari banker who failed with an attempted £5 billion takeover of Man Utd before the Glazers agreed a £1.2bn minority deal from Sir Jim Ratcliffe instead.
It was reported a few months ago that after failing to buy the Red Devils, Sheikh Jassim could potentially turn his attention to Spurs.
However, a source close to the Qatari has now explained why he is likely to wait for Man Utd to be on the market again in the future.
An anonymous advisor of Sheikh Jassim is quoted saying in The Daily Mail: “He [Jassim] is still a United fan. He is not going to rush off and try another Premier League club.
“If the opportunity to buy the whole of Manchester United arose again at some point in the future it is hard to see there not being a big level of interest. The plans are still there.”
As things stand, the most likely consortium to invest in Spurs appears to be Staveley‘s PCP Capital Partners.
Just a few days ago, the former Newcastle co-owner confirmed that the group is looking at investment opportunities and even suggested that an announcement might be made shortly.
Staveley said: “Yes, we’re looking at a number of investment operations. We can’t say too much at the moment because of you know, rules around it. But we will be able to talk about it, hopefully in the not-too-distant future.”
