The full-time whistle has sounded on the South Coast, and it’s time for our Tottenham player ratings. Spurs ran riot in the first-half, scoring five with no reply, but failed to add to the tally in the second period.
Tonight was a monumental occasion for two particular Spurs players, as Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence both started in the Premier League for Spurs for the first time. 19-year-old Alfie Dorrington also made his Spurs debut, coming on as a substitute.
Believe it or not, since signing 884 days ago, this was actually Djed Spence’s first-ever start for Tottenham altogether. The right-back also signed a new contract with Spurs earlier this season. It was a huge opportunity for the full-back to impress Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou and dislodge the out-of-form Porro from his right-back spot that he has held for so long.
18-year-old Lucas Bergvall arrived from Swedish side Djurgardens in the summer prior to this season, and although he has started in the Europa League, and has featured in a number of PL games this season coming off the bench, he has been yet to start one.
Either due to his recent impressive cameos, or Spurs’ contemporary lack of midfield options, the young Swede has been given a huge opportunity by Postecoglou.
Let’s take a look at our Tottenham player ratings from the 5-0 away win.
Fraser Forster: Forster put in a decent display but he wasn’t massively troubled. 7.
Djed Spence: It was a first Spurs start for Tottenham’s Spence despite signing for the club in July 2022. The full-back started brightly on the right side, combining well with Deki and Maddison, even providing a beautiful assist to the latter to open the scoring after thirty seconds. Impressive. 8.
Archie Gray: Gray was really solid throughout the ninety minutes, and he played an important part in Spurs’ victory. 7.5.
Radu Dragusin: Radu was reliable, although he wasn’t massively troubled. 7.
Destiny Udogie: After a bright start to the match, Destiny went off with an injury, only adding to Spurs’ ongoing injury woes. A real shame for him. N/A.
Pape Sarr: Pape was bright and lively throughout the match, popping up with a well-taken goal to open his PL account for the season. It came subject to some superb dribbling to escape the surrounding defenders. Outside of that, Sarr was really solid, linking the defence to the attack nicely and hardly putting a foot wrong. 8.5.
Lucas Bergvall: On his full Premier League debut, Bergvall was calm on the ball, tidy with his passing and excellent in his decision-making. Promising signs from the youngster! 7.5.
James Maddison: Maddison excelled in the first half, scoring a brace with both goals coming in the first and last minute of the half. Both goals were cooly finished, with his second flying into the top corner from an extremely tight angle against all the odds. James Maddison with confidence is some player! 10.
Dejan Kulusevski: Deki was relentless all night, running up and down the flanks and creating chances for fun. His goal was a gift but well-taken nonetheless. It wasn’t his most impressive performance as of late but he did what was asked of him and more. The fact that this was one of his worst displays in recent weeks says it all about his ability. 8.
Dominic Solanke: Solanke will probably be the least satisfied player tonight as Spurs’ striker failed to get on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win. He didn’t have any real chances to do so but still, he undoubtedly would’ve been disappointed. 6.5
Heung-Min Son: After an emphatic first-half display, the Spurs captain was substituted at half-time with a goal and two assists to his name. He was a real threat to Southampton throughout the first half, creating chance after chance. An opportunity for rest for Sonny. 9.
Substitutes:
Pedro Porro: Porro came on for Udogie, who picked up an injury early in the first half. He did okay, but he didn’t do anything major. 6.
Alfie Dorrington: It was a brilliant moment for 19-year-old Alfie Dorrington who made his long-awaited Spurs debut tonight! N/A.
Brennan Johnson: Brennan replaced Sonny at half-time, but he didn’t make any impact at all. 6.
Timo Werner: It was a chance for Timo to impress but he struggled to make anything of it. N/A.
Will Lankshear: More minutes in the tank for Lankshear! N/A.
