After registering his first Spurs goal since March, Timo Werner discussed how tough the recent spell of games has been for him, and his manager, Ange Postecoglou, congratulated the player on a good performance against Man City in the Carabao Cup.
Werner had been given plenty of game time in recent weeks due to the injury to Heung-min Son, but patience was running thin with the German after a number of sub-par displays and missed opportunities.
He made no mistake when the ball fell to him early in the game against City on Wednesday night, though, rifling the ball past Stefan Ortega to give Spurs the lead.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game about what that Spurs goal meant to him, Timo Werner said: “It is always hard to play against a team like Man City.
“It is good to score, especially when it is so early in the game. The last few weeks were tough, but you can’t stop you always have to go on.”
His manager, Ange Postecoglou, kept faith in the winger through this difficult period, and finally saw that faith repaid. The Spurs boss was also asked about Werner’s impact in the game, and had nothing but praise for the 28-year-old.
He said: “Great for Timo. He is going through a tough time, but the build-up play was great. It should lift him, we are supporting him, but it is down to him and his approach to things. He was unlucky to not get one or two more, if attacking players don’t score they feel anxiety a bit.”
I’ll be the first to admit I have been a little hard on Timo Werner of late, but I’m delighted he got that goal. You can see how much it means to him, and hopefully, it can be the start of a more confident player who can really influence games.
