Naturally, Ange Postecoglou was pretty unhappy after seeing his Spurs side end up on the losing side against Brighton on Sunday evening, and the manager has made it very clear how he feels about his players in his post-match comments.
Despite holding a two-goal lead at half-time, thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, Tottenham somehow managed to finish the game on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline at the Amex Stadium.
Brighton came out of the blocks in the second half far hungrier than Spurs, and punished the complacency of the Lilywhites with a three-goal salvo within 20 minutes of the restart.
Discussing his feelings after the game (via Football.London), Ange Postecoglou explained what went down in the dressing room after the final whistle.
He said: “Feedback is always what I believe in. I’m sure the players are disappointed. I don’t care. They should be. I’m disappointed, the fans are disappointed. They need to know what you can lose a game of football but the disappointment comes from not doing the basics you need to play at this level.”
Once again, Tottenham go into the international break with a poor result to stew over, and it sounds like Postecoglou will certainly do just that.
When asked what his message is for the Spurs players after the devastating defeat, Postecoglou told Sky Sports: “There is no message. It is a terrible loss for us – as bad as it gets. Only one way to fix it and that’s my responsibility.
“We lost all our duels and if you’re not competitive it is not going to work – we were not competitive. They all go international duty the majority of them. They will process it individually and I will process it when everyone gets back.”
To be fair to Postecoglou, he has reacted far more calmly and rationally than I would in this situation. His team completely switched off in the second half and that timid, tepid display made it so easy for Brighton to dominate us and get the win. It’s hard to think of a more lifeless, spineless defeat than that one.
