Phil Jones waxes lyrical about the performances of two Tottenham players on the back of the club’s 3-0 win against Manchester United.
Tottenham have received plenty of praise for the way they pressed Man United incessantly and the manner in which they cut through the home side time and again.
However, Postecoglou would be just as pleased with his side’s defensive showing after they managed to come away with their second clean sheet of the season.
In fact, the North London club have the joint second-best defence across the Premier League so far this campaign, having conceded just five goals across their six matches.
Jones reserved special praise for Tottenham’s centre-back pairing, who hardly put a foot wrong across the 90 minutes at Old Trafford.
Although their job was made easier after Bruno Fernandes’ red card just before half-time, both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven snuffed out danger brilliantly, hardly losing any dual.
Jones told Match of the Day 2 (29/09/24) about Tottenham’s centre-back pairing: “I thought these two were terrific. They epitomise the qualities that Ange Postecoglou wants from his defenders – front foot, aggressive, winning the ball back, high up the pitch. I thought that the distances were terrific between the pair.”
While there is no doubting the defensive qualities of Romero and Van de Ven, the pair are also extremely valuable for the way that Postecoglou’s men build up.
The Argentine’s passing range and vision help Tottenham to break the opposition press with ease while Van de Ven’s recovery pace allows the side to squeeze the opposition higher up the pitch.
The Dutchman has also demonstrated on a couple of occasions this season that he is more than capable of carrying the ball long distances if spaces open up for him.
