Tottenham Hotspur have a number of key players in their side right now, but there is one who is currently out of action that Spurs legend Teddy Sheringham thinks will be absolutely vital to Ange Postecoglou’s team this season.
The main thing lacking in the Spurs squad last season was evidently someone who could put the ball in the back of the net and make the most of all the opportunities that came from Postecoglou‘s attacking style of play.
As we saw in the defeat against Newcastle United at the weekend, that is still very much the case, with the Lilywhites spurning a number of great chances and failing to make their dominance pay.
But, the answer to that issue is already at the club, as Sheringham highlights Dominic Solanke as the man to lead Spurs forward and make a difference.
He told Prime Casino: “I think Dominic Solanke will be Tottenham’s most important player this season. He’s the man that Ange and the club have placed a lot of faith in to add the finishing touch to the team.
“There’s an expectation that he will score the goals we need and will be the difference-maker in games that are tight. He’s joined for a large fee and that adds a certain amount of pressure. He’s also making a step up in his playing level.
“Tottenham create so many chances. When the games come thick and fast, when the energy levels are low, you need to take those. Solanke will need to be ruthless in front of goal. Tottenham will create the chances for him, [but] he has to take them.”
After signing in a reported £65m deal (Sky Sports), there are big expectations on Solanke’s shoulders, who needs to prove that his prolific season with Bournemouth last term was not a fluke.
The striker is currently out injured after picking up an ankle knock in Tottenham’s first game of the season, but he is expected to return for the North London derby on September 15th.

I wouldn’t say Solanke is our most important player right now, but he’s definitely got the potential to become our match-winner.
With the number and style of chances we create, he should be lapping those up and getting big numbers this season, and if he does, he could be the difference between us having a good season and a great one.
