Micky van de Ven has revealed that the freedom Ange Postecoglou gives his defenders means that he feels comfortable making lung-busting forward runs like the one he did against Everton on Saturday.
Van de Ven delivered a clinical display at the back alongside Cristian Romero against the Toffees, mopping up every loose ball and ensuring that the away side got absolutely no joy in open play.
However, the Dutchman’s best moment arguably came at the other end of the pitch as he carried the ball from the edge of his own box to the edge of Everton’s in the 77th minute before playing Son Heung-min through on goal, with the Spurs captain turning the ball home to net his second of the game and Tottenham’s fourth.
Van de Ven confessed that he decided to turn on the afterburners as soon as he saw space open up in the middle.
He told The Standard about his assist to Son: “I just decided to keep running, hopefully, nobody could stop me, and nothing happened. I knew Sonny was on my left so I kept driving at the centre back and at the right moment I played Sonny in and he made a good finish.
“I think they [the fans] loved the moment. When I was dribbling with the ball you could sense everyone in the stadium was getting really hyped and, yeah, it went off.”
The defender confessed that he feels comfortable making such runs as that as Postecoglou gives the players the freedom to take risks.
The former Wolfsburg man added: “We have the possibility to do this, Ange gives us the possibility to do it and he’s never like, ‘The centre-backs have to stay behind’. I feel comfortable to play like this.
“He trusts his defenders, and he trusts everybody in the team to do what they want to do, and it’s really important for us to feel that trust and have the confidence to do it.”

From back to front, the current Tottenham side is full of extremely quick and athletic players and no side will enjoy coming up against us this season.
