Tottenham Hotspur bounced back from their opening match draw away to Leicester City with a thumping 4-0 home performance against Everton this evening.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the match:
In all honesty, that game was a carbon copy of the first 45 minutes Spurs played against Leicester last week. The only difference was that Tottenham kept it up for two halves instead of just one this time around.
Spurs seem to get a little jittery just after conceding a goal, but the best way to avoid that is to just keep a clean sheet! Everyone played their part today in a real team performance. It’s nice to see Spurs actually take their chances in front of goal for once. We haven’t seen too many clear-cut victories like that in recent seasons.
As debuts go for 19-year-olds in the Premier League, that was a pretty good one. I think everyone was a little shocked to see Odobert thrown straight into the starting XI, especially given the embarrassment of riches Spurs have out wide at the moment.
However, unlike some of Tottenham’s other wingers, Odobert’s game seems to thrive on taking defenders on and getting to the byline. That was a real feature of Spurs’ play in the first 45, with Maddison setting the Frenchman away time and time again. The only thing he missed out on was a goal or assist, but it looks like plenty of them will come in the weeks to follow. He started to run out of gas a little in the second half, but he certainly did enough to warrant another start next week.
After sitting one match out on the naughty step, and with Rodrigo Bentancur absent due to his concussion last week, Yves Bissouma was handed a chance at redemption today. And what a day to smash one into the top corner to score your first-ever Tottenham goal!
At the time, it felt like it was going to be another one of those days where Spurs wouldn’t take their chances, after missed efforts from Romero and Maddison, but Bissouma’s goal ended up opening the floodgates. He also did a great job of holding the fort down as the sole central midfielder, with Maddison and Kulusevski camped in the Everton half in more attacking roles.
You always want your key goalscorers to get off the mark early in the Premier League, so Sonny getting a brace today will do him and Spurs the world of good. Son’s first goal was the epitome of Postecoglou football, pressing from the front and forcing a shocking mistake from Pickford to roll the ball into an empty net. His second was just a classic striker’s finish, receiving Van de Ven’s pass and finishing coolly past the Everton keeper.
The South Korean winger looked sharp in front of goal today, which Spurs needed in the absence of Dominic Solanke down the middle. The only shame is that Solanke himself probably would have scored a couple today had he not been injured.
Let us not forget that Tottenham only managed 6 Premier League clean sheets in 38 games last season. Hopefully, today is a sign that the Lilywhites are going to improve, at least somewhat, at the back over the course of the 2024/25 campaign.
Not only that, but Romero and Van de Ven managed to shut out Everton while also recording a goal and an assist respectively. In fact, the Argentine should have had a brace today! This Postecoglou team really does have goals in it from all over the pitch, which makes Tottenham extremely hard to defend against.
