After seeing his side put in a dominant display and bag all three points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was asked about Yves Bissouma’s role in the win, and had positive things to say after a difficult week for the midfielder.
The big story before kick-off was the return of Yves Bissouma. The midfielder missed the first game of the season against Leicester City after the club imposed an internal suspension on him for using laughing gas.
With Rodrigo Bentancur out with a concussion, however, Bissouma was given the chance to redeem himself and was handed the start by Postecoglou.
It didn’t take long for the Malian to prove his worth, either. After just 14 minutes, Bissouma was given the ball at the edge of the box and sent the ball flying past Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal, to register his first competitive goal for Spurs.
Bissouma put in a top performance to match that goal, and can come away from the game with his head held high.
Speaking to the press (via Football.London) after the game, Postecoglou was asked about the situation, and revealed he is happy with Bissouma’s performance, though admitted there is still work to be done.
He said: “Biss was good and we know Biss is a good footballer. It’s about him being the best version of himself and he will only get there if, as we’ve spoken a few times, discipline is a big thing for him and I thought it was a disciplined performance for him today you know.
“Not just the goal he scored, but he had a really important job for us. He knew they’d sort of play fairly direct and he had to be there to mop up second balls and intercept things and he was clean for the most part in possession. So good performance.”
This performance will have gone a long way to putting Bissouma back in the Spurs manager’s good books. Bissouma is quite likely the first-choice central midfielder for Postecoglou, but will have to keep working hard to retain his place now.
It remains to be seen whether he will keep that spot once Bentancur returns, but the performance today won’t harm his chances.
Spurs Web Opinion
We all know Bissouma’s behaviour was out of order, but there’s no better way to repair that damage than what he did today. A fantastic goal, a dynamic performance in the middle of the park, and a clear sign of just how much he wants to be forgiven, too.
