Italian journalist Maurizio Pistocchi has claimed that some of Tottenham’s best players threatened to leave the club if Antonio Conte had stayed.
Conte made a promising start to his spell at Spurs, guiding the club to a top-four finish in his finish in his first campaign in charge, despite taking over a side which was struggling at the start of November.
However, the wheels came off midway into the Italian’s second season in charge and things soured pretty quickly, with the 55-year-old unleashing an infamous rant about the Spurs players by labelling them ‘selfish’ just before his eventual departure (ESPN).
After a break of nearly a year and a half, Conte is now back working in the game, having taken over as Napoli’s head coach earlier this summer.
However, the former Tottenham boss is not a happy man in Naples, admitting last week that he has not been happy with the club’s summer business (Football Italia).
Napoli suffered a 3-0 defeat away at Verona in Conte’s first game in charge last Sunday and unsurprisingly, he did not shy away from criticising his players, accusing them of ‘melting like snow in the sun’ (Mirror).
Pistocchi has now pointed out that the Italian coach has a ‘my way or the highway approach’ and that it often makes him fall out with his players, claiming it did so at both Spurs and Chelsea.
The journalist said (via FC Inter 1908) about Conte: “Good coach but with only one idea in his head. And it’s not always wonderful.
“At Chelsea and Tottenham, the most talented players threatened to leave if he stayed, at Juve and Inter whoever replaced him did better than him. I repeat good coach but with only one idea (and that’s not good).”

While there is no doubt that Conte is a talented coach, it was not an enjoyable experience to have him as your manager, given his constant tendency to make excuses and criticise the players publicly.
Some fans claim he has a ‘winning mentality’ but the irony is that he showed just the opposite, constantly making excuses and playing down expectations.
Ange has shown much more of a winning mentality than Conte ever did, with the Australian not afraid of announcing his big ambitions and putting pressure on himself.
