Spurs drew their opening game of the season away to Leicester in a result characterised by missed chances. Former Spur, Graham Roberts, was particularly frustrated though at the omission of Dejan Kulusevski from the starting XI.
24-year-old forward Dejan Kulusevksi, caused some frustration in the stands of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season, despite netting eight Premier League goals, as many Spurs fans felt the Swede had fallen from his standards in previous seasons. (TransferMarkt)
Kulusevksi became an almost instant hit among fans when he initially joined on loan from Juventus in January 2022, thriving on the right wing under Antonio Conte and contributing eight assists and five goals in just half a season in North London.
Postecoglou seems to have struggled to find Kulusevski’s ideal position in his system although the Swede did shine in pre-season either as a creative midfielder or a striker, even scoring a brace against Bayern Munich.
Tottenham failed to make their 70% possession and multiple chances count on Monday night against Leicester City.
Kulusevski, perhaps surprisingly, didn’t start despite his bright pre-season campaign, which left two-time FA Cup winner, Graham Roberts, more than a little perplexed.
He said on X: “After watching the game last night big disappointment not finishing the chances we created, for me, I couldn’t believe that Kulu never started he’s played every pre-season game and was probably our best player in pre-season. We look forward to Saturday a must-win game COYS.”
Although Kulusevski had a particularly impressive end to pre-season, I think the Swede is in a strange position where he is no longer as effective on the right wing in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
As much as Brennan Johnson can frustrate people, Kulusevksi being heavily left-footed and struggling to beat a man and drive in a cross means the only real space for him in the team is as an attacking midfielder or striker, where Solanke and Maddison both performed very well.
