Tottenham Hotspur’s summer spending may not be over just yet, as the club is thought to be keen on signing another midfielder before the end of the transfer window later this month.
Spurs have already brought in Archie Gray this summer, while Lucas Bergvall has joined the squad after signing in January.
The two teenagers have effectively replaced Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp, who have joined Marseille and Leicester City, respectively, this summer.
But it seems Postecoglou wants more cover in the middle of the park, especially in light of the injury suffered by Rodrigo Bentancur in the Lilywhites’ first league game of the season on Monday night.
That’s according to a report from GiveMeSport, with a claim that Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes will be targeted in the next week or so by Spurs.
It is thought Spurs are looking at completing a move for Gomes late in the window, as the club continues to identify areas for improvement in the squad, with Daniel Levy and Johan Lange leading the recruitment process.
Apparently, Gomes is firmly on Tottenham’s radar as he matches the profile of an “energetic midfielder who is capable of breaking forward” that Postecoglou is looking for.
The report states Wolves would not want to sell Gomes, but Spurs are ready to test the waters in the near future.
Speculation linking Gomes to Spurs has intensified of late, with rumours the two clubs can strike a deal for around £50m.
According to WhoScored, Gomes would be the perfect addition to the Spurs midfield, too. Gomes has made more tackles (130) than any other player in the Premier League since the start of last season, and would offer the Lilywhites that ball-winning ability they need.
Spurs Web Opinion
I really like Joao Gomes. I think he’s got a bit of everything that we want: he can win the ball, he can drive forward with it, he can pop up with goals, and he’s got bags of energy, too. I’d be very happy if we added him to our squad this summer.
