Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of a member of Ange Postecoglou’s first-team squad.
It has been confirmed on the official Spurs website that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has completed his transfer to Olympique Marseille.
The Danish international was in the final year of his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and had been heavily linked with a move away from the club during the current transfer window.
The 28-year-old moves to the Ligue 1 side on loan for the 2024/25 season, with an obligation that would see the move become permanent.
Hojbjerg was reported to have been the subject of interest from Galatasaray with the vice-chairman of the Turkish giants admitting earlier this month they were keen on the midfielder while also revealing he had many suitors (CNN Turk).
Fabrizio Romano first broke news of Marseille’s interest in the former Southampton player late on Saturday evening (20/7/24) on the social network platform X.
Hojbjerg made 184 appearances for Spurs, netting 10 times and grabbing 16 assists across all competitions during his time in N17 (transfermarkt).
He spent four years in North London but became a bit-part player under boss Ange Postecoglou who had the likes of Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma ahead of him in the pecking order last season.
SpursWeb Opinion
Hojbjerg’s commitment and professionalism could never be questioned, however, his style of play simply does not suit the way Ange Postecoglou expects his players to operate.
Under the Australian, players have to be brave on the ball and be able to move it quickly into forward positions, which is not the Dane’s style.
