According to a report in The Daily Mail (as relayed by 90 min), Tottenham failed with an attempt to sign Joe Gomez from Liverpool in January.
Heading into the January window, it was clear that signing a centre-back would be one of Spurs’ priorities as Ange Postecoglou lacked a quality backup to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
In the end, the club offloaded Eric Dier and loaned out Ashley Phillips to Plymouth Argyle while bringing Radu Dragusin through the door from Genoa.
The Mail have now suggested that the Lilywhites also looked closer to home for a centre-back, making an enquiry to Liverpool about Gomez’s availability.
It is explained that the 26-year-old’s versatility prompted Ange Postecoglou’s men to test the waters and see if a move was on the cards.
However, the publication states that the North London club did not get very far, with the Reds swiftly turning down their advances and deciding to hang on to the England international.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham reignite their interest in Gomez in the summer, with the defender capable of covering for the centre-back and right-back roles.
However, given the central defenders that Postecoglou now has at his disposal, I am not sure the Liverpool star would be too keen on a move to the North London side.
