As the Leftist Honduras Government Tries To Derail the Presidential Election, Top General Guarantees He Will Support and Recognize the Voting Results
The election victor shall take office, according to the top military chief.
The ongoing Presidential election in Honduras has shown the world all the ugly stereotypes about the ‘cone sur’ democracies: chaos in the vote counting, multiple accusations of illegalities, the current government trying to derail the whole process, and finally a general stepping up to control the situation.
Talk about Banana Republic… but it didn’t have to be like that.
Honduran outgoing President Xiomara Castro denounced yesterday (9) an ‘electoral coup’.
Reuters reported:
“The election has been marked by technical failures, unsubstantiated fraud claims and a shadow cast by US President Donald Trump, who has threatened to withdraw funding for the Central American nation if his preferred candidate is not successful.
‘We are seeing a process marked by threats, coercion, manipulation of the TREP (vote transmission system) and adulteration of the popular will’, Castro, who is from the leftist LIBRE party and set to leave office in January, told a press conference. She also condemned Trump’s intervention in the race on behalf of conservative Nasry Asfura of the National Party. ‘These actions constitute an electoral coup that is under way and we will denounce them’, she said.”
Trump-supported Asfura is the virtual winner, leading the ballot count by 1.32 percentage points, or roughly 40,000 votes, with 99.4% of the tally sheets counted.
In the meantime, the real power brokers behind the Republic made their move.
Hondudiario reported:
“The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Major General Roosevelt Leonel Hernández, assured that the Armed Forces (FFAA) will support and recognize the results expressed by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which at the moment have the candidate Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura with the advantage as the virtual winner with 99.40 percent of the minutes transmitted.
[…] The general said that the Armed Forces are the guarantors that the transfer of power is established, and ‘that undoubtedly has to be established and we are the guarantors of it’.”
