Is This the Best Day of David Beckham’s Life?
That’s Sir David Beckham to you. On Tuesday, while New Yorkers were consumed with the biggest mayoral election in years, the 50-year-old soccer player was knighted by King Charles III at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle for his services in sport and charity. It’s his “proudest moment,” according to CNN, though I’m not sure how anything could top the launch of his very own beekeeping gummies.
“I’ve been very obviously lucky in my career to have won what I’ve won and done what I’ve done, but to receive an honor like this, of a knight, is beyond anything that I ever thought that I would receive,” Beckham told the U.K.’s PA Media news agency after the ceremony, per CNN.
He shared more of his feelings in an Instagram post featuring a photo of him being knighted by the king. The very lengthy, very earnest caption reads in part, “I am truly humbled and so grateful for this honor. I have been fortunate to represent our country, and I’ve always done that with pride.” It continues, “I love our Royal Family and what it means to people not just in Great Britain but around the world. I could never have dreamed that this would happen to me.” Three of his children — Romeo, Cruz, and Harper — were in attendance, while his son Brooklyn and daughter-in-law, Nicola Peltz, were not.
Beckham really does love the royals. In 2023, he waited almost 12 hours overnight to view Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin, according to the Daily Mail. The King also apparently inspired the three-piece morning suit Beckham wore for the ceremony, which was designed by his wife, Victoria Beckham. “He was quite impressed with my suit,” the athlete said of Charles. “He’s kind of the most elegantly dressed man that I know, so he inspired quite a few of my looks over the years and he definitely inspired this look.” Okay!
