Kamala Harris is talking about her gun again. The vice-president appeared on 60 Minutes on Monday night as part of an election special, sitting down with correspondent Bill Whitaker. As part of the 20-minute interview, Harris was asked about her gun ownership, a topic that has come up more than once during her campaign.
“I have a Glock, and I’ve had it for quite some time. And — I mean, look, Bill, my background is in law enforcement,” Harris said when asked what kind of gun she owned and why she got it. Whitaker followed up by asking if she’d ever fired it.
“Yes. Of course I have,” Harris replied with a hearty chuckle. “At a shooting range, yes, of course I have.”

At last month’s presidential debate, Donald Trump claimed that Harris “wants to confiscate your guns.” She took the opportunity to remind voters that she is not staunchly against the Second Amendment. “Tim Walz and I are both gun owners,” Harris said, referencing her running mate. “We’re not taking anybody’s guns away.”
A week later, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harris surprised some viewers with her candid pro-gun remarks. “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot.” Harris told Winfrey. The vice-president laughed — she loves to laugh about guns — and said, “I’m sorry. Probably should not have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”
While Harris is trying to convince people who like guns that she’s one of them, she is simultaneously trying to convince anti-gun folks that she’s working on that, too. In her interview with Winfrey, Harris referred to assault-weapons bans, universal background checks, and red-flag laws as “common sense.” With only a month left in this incredibly close race, how will she bring up her gun next? My money is on her visiting a shooting range in western Pennsylvania.
