Back in January, Sophie Turner predicted that 2024 would be “the year of the girlies.” Manifestation, it seems, works: Not only is the Game of Thrones alum set to star in several upcoming projects — including a Prime Video heist series called Haven, the sci-fi film Cloud One, and a six-part crime drama series titled Joan in which she plays one of London’s most notorious diamond thieves, Joan Hannington — she announced a new partnership with elderflower-liqueur brand St-Germain.
In a St-Germain campaign video released earlier this month, the actress searches for her perfect match in the south of France. Her ideal qualities? Fresh, fun, bright, bubbly, and sweet — but not too sweet, of course. In the end, she finds them all in the form of a refreshing St-Germain Hugo spritz.
“It was an ode to the early-2000s rom-coms, which was super-exciting to me because I’ve never really done a rom-com,” Turner tells the Cut from her suite at the Baccarat Hotel in New York City. The rom-com homage even extended to the wardrobe she wears in the video — the yellow dress she slips into for the campaign is a nod to Kate Hudson’s character in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
Turner has actually been drinking St-Germain Hugo spritzes since before they were cool, she claims. The ingredients — St-Germain, Prosecco, soda water, mint leaves, a lime wedge, and mint garnish — are all pretty easy to procure, and the cocktail is “super-easy to make at home,” the 28-year-old promises: “I would drink this all year round.”
Are you someone who likes to pregame before you go out?
I always pregame. You need a good playlist, you need good friends. You need a good environment. Maybe a good pub.
What are your rules for being here in New York City?
The minute I wake up, I go outside. I lived here for a few years, and I love New York. The city just gives you energy. I just walk and walk and walk. If you’ve got nothing to do, you’ll find something to do or you’ll bump into someone. I used to really struggle with depression, and living in New York was the best thing for me. It’s the most energizing city in the world. And people in New York are so chill.
Any fashion rules for this heat wave?
Wear a bra, because you’ll get underboob sweat if you don’t. I get really bad underboob sweat, so I need a bra that will collect it.
Are you having a hot-girl summer?
I mean, I’d like to think I’m having a hot-girl summer. But I don’t know if you can say that about yourself. I feel like I am, though.
Or maybe even a Brat-girl summer?
Yeah, I think I’m having more of a Brat-girl summer. I don’t fully understand what it means, but I am listening to the album. So I guess that counts as me having a Brat-girl summer.
I know you’re bringing back your viral Instagram series “That’s the Tea.” What are your rules for posting on social media?
My biggest rule is: Don’t look at the comments. Just post what you want, when you want, and then ignore it for the rest of your life. The comments just ruin lives.
Do you have rules for your glam team?
We have to have good chats and good conversations. I hate sitting in silence getting my hair and makeup done. I think it should be a fun, exciting experience. When you’re a little girl, getting your hair and makeup done professionally is what you dream of, so I just want a team around me that’s fun and loves good gossip. You know that the hairstylists and makeup artists always have the best gossip. And they’re not shy about sharing it, which I love.
Are there any beauty treatments you swear by?
I just use micellar water and moisturizer at night, and that’s my skin-care routine. I can’t do my hair, I can’t really do makeup, so I kind of just live my life looking a mess most of the time.
Are you the hostess type?
No, that stresses me out. I can’t do that. I can show up to a party, have a great time, and leave. But I will never host a party. I’ve never hosted a party for myself, but I throw parties for my kids, and it’s like the worst day ever. I can’t host.
Honestly, though, the over-the-top first-birthday parties I see on Instagram do look very stressful.
I know! It’s like, just take them to a trampoline park.
Do you have rules for meeting other famous people?
I find you have to be really careful about differentiating what you learn about on the internet versus what you actually know about a person. Sometimes, I’ll go up to someone and be like, “Oh, this happened to you!” And they’ll be like, “I never told you that.” And I’m like, “Oh, I guess I read that in the Daily Mail.” So, I suppose just learning about a person from the person themselves. It’s the same with anyone; if someone says something negative about someone, you always have to find out for yourself rather than make those judgments. I try not to be influenced by what I see on the internet about people.
Is there anything you need to have in your trailer while on set?
I just have pictures of my kids all over my trailer. The first day I go in, I stick up pictures of my kids. I have nice candles, a blanket, and slippers. I just need those things and I’m happy.
What about parenting rules?
I never tell my kids that they stink when I change their nappies. I hope they’re not sensitive to it. I don’t know. I’m such a paranoid parent. I don’t want them to get any drama from anywhere, so even when I change their nappies, I’m like, “Mmm, you smell great! You’re perfect.”
Do you limit their screen time?
Yes, they only get half an hour of screen time per day. And that’s the max. Preferably it’s 15 minutes. I try to get them out of the house as much as possible. I think that’s the best thing for them, exploring the world, seeing new things, and trying to embrace everything that’s on their doorstep. When I was a kid — I grew up near Stratford — I would never go and see a Shakespeare play or anything like that, even though that’s where the Royal Shakespeare Company is. I want to give them the opportunity to do stuff like that. My kids travel all the time, but I want to give them the opportunity to travel within our little circle as well and get them to love London as much as I do.
Do you limit screen time for yourself, too?
I wish I could. But with my job, my agent lives in L.A., so I wake up and immediately have emails. I wish I could put my phone away in the mornings, but I just can’t. I’m not that girl. I sleep with my phone in one hand and my vape in the other.
What are your tips for someone who’s visiting London?
You really have to immerse yourself in pop culture. You need to get a Sunday roast in a pub. It’s like Thanksgiving every Sunday. There’s also really good Indian food in London. I don’t think anyone does Indian food quite like London — except India.
