Tengrinews.kz - A boat carrying 84 migrants capsized near the Canary Islands, resulting in fatalities, according to Euronews.
The Spanish sea rescue service reported that the boat overturned overnight, leading to at least nine confirmed deaths. After receiving an emergency call from one of the individuals on board, the Tenerife rescue center mobilized and successfully rescued 27 people. Nine bodies were also recovered from the sea.
Rescue teams indicated that the boat capsized shortly after midnight, about four miles from El Hierro, one of the islands in the Canary archipelago, as migrants shifted to one side of the vessel.
Search efforts were hampered by strong winds and darkness.
With daylight, rescue boats and helicopters continued the search for the 48 migrants still missing.
Similar incidents were recorded near the Canary Islands in 2022. In April, dozens went missing after a migrant boat capsized in the Atlantic Ocean. In October of the same year, the Spanish coast guard discovered a sunken boat with migrants off one of the Canary Islands, with only one survivor among the 34 people on board.
