On September 28th, Georgia vowed to arrest exiled former president and “opposition leader” Mikheil Saakashvili if he were to return to the country.
Saakashvili, president between 2004-2013 posted a picture on Facebook of a plane ticket to Tbilisi for October 2nd, right after polling stations close.
“I will be in Tbilisi to protect, together with you, your electoral choice,” he said in a video address on the social networking site.
It turned out that he lied and had returned earlier, on October 1st he posted on Facebook that he was back to Georgia after 8 years.
Georgian media cited the Interior Ministry as saying that Saakashvili did not cross the border.
Saakashvili earlier announced his intention to return to his homeland by the October elections to local self-government bodies. He has been put on the domestic wanted list in Georgia and is being investigated in several criminal cases. Representatives of the Georgian authorities have repeatedly stated that they will detain him as soon as he crosses the border.
Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that “if Saakashvili sets foot on Georgian soil, he will be immediately arrested and brought to prison.”
The founder of Georgia’s main opposition force, the United National Movement (UNM), 53-year-old Saakashvili is wanted by the Georgian authorities on abuse of office charges, which he says are politically motivated.
Saakashvili after fleeing his country years ago became the mayor of Ukraine’s Odessa and has since done little but throw out empty rhetoric and has not supported the country he abandoned.
Now that he’s decided to return to Georgia as “the savior”, he immediately turned and bit the hand that feeds.
Saakashvili, who is head of the executive committee of the National Council of Reforms of Ukraine Mikhail Saakashvili said that Ukraine has become a gateway for criminals from the post-Soviet space.
“Ukraine is a gateway, there are criminals from all over the post-Soviet space, there is a sump here … The criminals know for sure that everyone can be released. Issues must be resolved – you can hire any police investigator, any prosecutor, I am silent about judges. You just hire a policeman, and he will dance for any money on your order. How can such a policeman prevent something? The system is deeply sick. In the migration service you will stand in line for a long time, but for the money bin Laden will be given a certificate that will indicate that this is some kind of Something like Marchenko, whose great-grandfather lived in Ukraine. Anyone will drop in, any will leave, any will shoot, any will blow up. And all this is taking place in front of everyone,” he claimed.
For years he did little but defend Ukraine’s interest, verbally attack Russia and almost never mention Georgia, now that he decided to return, the rhetoric is rapidly changing.
