Late on July 16, the US-led coalition and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) carried out a successful counter-terrorism operation in the town of Diban in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
A joint force of the coalition and the SDF landed from helicopters in the al-Latwah neighborhood, where a cell of ISIS was taking shelter.
Following heavy clashes, two of the cell’s members were eliminated. Four other terrorists were captured by the joint force.
“The Coalition will continue with its partners to strike at the terrorists, reflecting the world-wide unity to see an enduring defeat delivered against Daesh [ISIS],” US-led coalition spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto said on Twitter. “US troops will continue the campaign as part of the Coalition to prevent a Daesh resurgence.”
The situation in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside is far from being stable. ISIS is not the only threat facing the US-led coalition in the region.
In the last three weeks, six attacks, allegedly carried out by Iranian-backed forces, targeted US-led coalition bases in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. Recently, a joint patrol of the coalition and the SDF uncovered Iranian-made rockets prepared for launch in the region.
