The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is preparing to launch a new ground operation in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib where many terrorist groups are present, Syrian pro-government journalist Mazen Ibrahim reported on July 1.
Ibrahim shared a video showing a gathering of SAA troops who will supposedly take part in the upcoming operation in Greater Idlib.
In the last few months, Greater Idlib militants, led by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), carried out dozens of attacks in a violation of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey on March 5, 2020.
The ceasefire is barely holding on. The SAA and its allies may be indeed planning to launch a new operation to deter the militants.
Nevertheless, sources in the army played down the claims made by Ibrahim. The sources told SouthFront that a ground operation seems unlikely as for now.
Any ground operation by the SAA and its allies in Greater Idlib will most likely lead to a serious confrontation with the Turkish military, which maintains a large force in the region. Ankara continues to support the region’s militants, including those fighting for HTS and other al-Qaeda factions.
