On October 20, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) deployed additional troops and heavy weapons at its newly-established positions in the countryside of Raqqa.
A video released by the Syrian state TV shows several battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and hundreds of service members heading towards the city of Tabqah in the governorate’s southern countryside.
Earlier, Syrian sources reported that U.S. forces had completed their withdrawal from Raqqa and the eastern Aleppo countryside. Dozens of trucks loaded with military equipment were seen leaving the last U.S. base between the two governorates.
The SAA’s deployment in northeast Syria began last week following an agreement between the Damascus government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The agreement allows the SAA to enter most of the region in order to counter the Turkish-led offensive.
So far, thousands of Syrian troops have been deployed in eastern Aleppo, Raqqa and northern al-Hasakah as a part of the agreement. The agreement forced Turkey to halt its attacks on the key cities of Manbij and Kobane.
