A US service member was killed in Afghanistan on July 13, NATO’s Resolute Support mission said in a statement without giving further details.
The Taliban took responsibility for the incident. According to the Afghan movement, its members used an improvised explosive device to target a U.S. vehicle in the Sayedabad District in the province of Wardak.
On July 14 morning, the U.S. Army identified the killed soldier as a decorated Green Beret. According to the army statement, Sgt. Maj. James G. “Ryan” Sartor, 40, of Teague, Texas, joined the Army in June 2001 and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division. Sgt. Maj. Sartor had been deployed to Iraq several times in recent years. He was deployed to Afghanistan, too, in 2017 and 2019.
The US Army noted that he earned several awards and decorations, and will be posthumously awarded with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star medal.
The death of Sgt. Maj. Sartor increased the number of US soldiers killed in action in Afghanistan in 2019 to ten. 2 more US service members were killed in 2019 in non-combat incidents.
