The Iranian intelligence has identified 290 spies of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) across different countries, the country’s Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi revealed on April 19.
“CIA operatives in these countries were identified and arrested and the contacts of the US intelligence agency with its sources were disrupted in such a way that a committee to assess the failure was set up in America,” Alavi said during Friday prayers in Tehran, according to Press TV.
Alavi said that the arrest of these spies was one of the biggest defeats in the history of the U.S. intelligence. The Iranian minister also promised that the details of these operations will be made public soon.
Last year, a report by Yahoo News revealed that the Iranians intelligence managed to compromise a secret internet-based communications system that CIA agents used to contact their operatives worldwide. The hack reportedly allowed the Iranian intelligence to identify dozens of U.S. spies between 2009 and 2013.
“We’re still dealing with the fallout … Dozens of people around the world were killed because of this,” a former U.S. national security official told Yahoo.
The Iranian intelligence minister said his country carried out a similar successful counter-intelligence operation against Britain’s MI6 secret service. He promised that the details of this operation will be also published soon.
Alavi’s announcement casts serious doubts on the efficiency and work ethics of the CIA, which has reportedly suffered from a similar failure in China.
