When Did Aubrey Plaza & Christopher Abbott Start Dating? The Actress Is Pregnant 1 Year After Her Husband's Death
Aubrey Plaza is pregnant!
The White Lotus actress, 41, is expecting her first baby with actor Christopher Abbott this fall, according to People. “It was a beautiful surprise after an emotional year,” a source said, adding that “they feel very blessed.”
Plaza’s pregnancy announcement comes one year after the death of her husband, Jeff Baena. The director died by suicide on January 3, 2025. After his passing, it was confirmed that he and Plaza had quietly separated in September 2024.
It is unclear when Plaza and Abbott started dating, but gossip account Deux Moi claimed they were in a relationship in July 2025, after eyewitnesses saw them cozying up at The Chatham Berry Farm just outside New York City.
Plaza and Abbott, 40, starred opposite each other in the Off-Broadway show Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in 2023 and co-starred in Black Bear in 2020.
“He cares but he also doesn’t care; it’s the best recipe for me for a scene partner,” Plaza said of the Girls actor in a 2023 interview with The New York Times. “It’s fun and it’s also good and it’s also safe. I like to just throw things out the window also and laugh and mess around and not take it so seriously. It’s a hard combo to come by.”
Abbott also dished out some praise for his now-partner, saying, “We’re both unafraid to be ugly and weird and strange.”
Plaza married Baena in 2021 after 10 years of dating. After his death, she was candid about struggling with her grief during an August 2025 appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast. “Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning,” she said. “I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m OK, but it’s a daily struggle, obviously.”
Plaza likened her grief to the 2025 film The Gorge, saying, “There’s like a cliff on one side and there’s a cliff on the other side, then there’s gorge in between.”
“I swear when I watched it I was like, that feels like what my grief is like or what grief could be like,” Plaza explained. “Where at all times there’s like a giant ocean of awfulness, that’s right there and I can see it. Sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it. Then sometimes I just look at it, and sometimes I try to get away from it. But, it’s always there.”
