Priyanka Chopra Reveals Why She’s ‘in Constant Fear’ for Her Daughter Malti With Nick Jonas
On the outside looking in, everything seems perfect in Priyanka Chopra Jonas’s family. But, in reality, she is living “in constant fear” for her 4-year-old daughter Malti Marie, who she shares with Nick Jonas.
In a cover interview for Marie Claire’s Craftsmanship issue, published online on March 4, The Bluff star opened up about the worries she has for her toddler. Malti was born via surrogate in 2022 and spent over 100 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit “fighting for her life.”
“Our daughter was very coveted and very desired because I had a really tough time with pregnancies,” she told the outlet. “She’s my miracle baby, so everything just stopped when she was born. I think it’s a preemie mom or a NICU mom thing, but I’m still in constant fear.”
“When she’s not right by my side or she’s at school or when I’m in a different country, it’s this feeling that your heart is running outside of your body,” Chopra Jonas added.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Citadel star shared how much her life has changed since becoming a mom. “All my priorities have changed,” she said. “Everything starts and ends with her.”
Last month, Chopra Jonas shared more details about the birth of her daughter in an interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast. “She’s a miracle baby because she was my only hope at that time to be able to have a baby,” Chopra Jonas said. “So, when we were told that she’s coming at 27 weeks, I just shut down.”
She recalled how Jonas came to pick her up and take her to the hospital and the whole experience was “really intense.”
“She was purple,” Chopra Jonas said about her daughter. “And we didn’t know… The NICU nurses couldn’t, like … their little finger was too big for her mouth. How they intubated her was … like, I still see that image.”
“It was such a personally traumatic time, but somehow, because we were in and out of the hospital, I remember it leaked,” she continued, adding that they were “forced into announcing her birth” before the media reported it, even though they still didn’t know “what would happen” to their daughter.
“It was three months. Almost 110 days,” Chopra Jonas said about her time in the NICU. “We stopped everything. We were in the hospital every day with her.”
Chopra Jonas said the first time she held her daughter, who was only 1 pound, 11 ounces at the time, she thought, “I will go to the ends of the earth to protect you.”
“It’s like your heart is beating outside of your body,” she continued. “And especially with her because she was so vulnerable. I became a tigress about everything.” And who can blame her?
