Savannah Guthrie’s Mom ‘Did Not Leave On Her Own,’ Say Police Who Described A ‘Very Concerning’ Scene At Her Home
Police are not investigating the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom as a crime after finding a “very concerning” scene at her home.
Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of the Today host was last seen around 9:45 pm on Saturday at her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, Arizona.
“We know she didn’t just walk out of there. She did not leave on her own,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at a press conference Monday, per the New York Post, citing “suspicious” circumstances at Nancy’s home. “She is very limited in her mobility,” he said, adding that the mother of three “could not walk 50 yards on her own.”
Authorities declined to disclose further details about the scene at Nancy’s home, saying, “It would be inappropriate at this time.” However, after enlisting the help of homicide detectives, Nanos confirmed that they are treating her disappearance as a crime.
“We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime, and we’re asking the community’s help,” he said.
Nancy was reportedly dropped home by one of her children on Saturday night and was reported missing after she didn’t show up to a local church service. Savannah, who has an older brother and an older sister, missed a February 2 Today Show broadcast amid the investigation.
Nanos insisted that, despite Nancy’s physical ailments, she is “of great sound mind,” adding, “This is not a dementia-related… She is as sharp as a tack. The family wants you to know she didn’t just wander off.”
Authorities confirmed that they are in possession of Nancy’s phone and are using it to gather more information.
Meanwhile, a source close to the family told the Daily Mail, “Her stuff was left behind at the house: keys, ID, purse, phone, everything.”
