Halle Berry is headed to the White House for her latest project, but she’s working with a former president, not the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
The 59-year-old Oscar winner is set to bring former President Bill Clinton’s novel, The President Is Missing, to the big screen, first reported by Deadline. Clinton co-authored the book with legendary thriller author James Patterson in 2018, but Berry is giving the novel a twist. It’s what the outlet is describing as a “gender-swapped movie adaptation” after David Oyelowo was originally attached to the project.
Instead, Berry will play President Joanna Duncan, who “has to elude her own secret service and escape the confines of the White House in a gambit to save the world single-handedly” from a lethal cyberterrorist attack. The 42nd president took some elements from his time in office to write the fictional tale.
In a June 2018 interview with Patterson for NPR, he revealed that it is possible for terrorists to take over the internet.
“Yes, I think it could be done,” Clinton explained. “And I think someone could take out at least one of our grids, the eastern half of the country, and simultaneously fry the transformers so you couldn’t bring it back up in a hurry. Someone could take out the bank records and, if you had a clever enough virus, simultaneously the backups.”
Not terrifying at all… yikes! Still, Berry shared the big news, along with several other projects, with her Instagram followers on January 28.
“New chapter unlocked 💪🏽 Words can’t describe how excited I am for this second act in film and TV,” she wrote in the caption. ” ✨ @ladyjeets [Holly Jeter, president of their joint production company, HalleHolly] love you so much. You have been the best creative partner and friend I could ask for! To the moon! 🌕”
While the U.S. has yet to elect a female president, Berry is ready to set the stage on film, and with the expertise of a former White House resident, Bill Clinton.
