Meghan Markle Reflects on Her Time as a Girl Scout — & Reveals Whether She Will Let Princess Lilibet Join

Long before she married a prince, Meghan Markle was just an ordinary girl — one who loved her time in the Girl Scouts. The Duchess of Sussex opened up about her time in the iconic organization at a surprise appearance at Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, where she opened up about whether she will let her daughter Princess Lilibet, 4, join one day.

Markle and her husband Prince Harry attended the premiere of the documentary Cookie Queens, which they executive produced. The film follows four ambitious Girl Scouts, including one who sold 12,000 boxes of cookies.

“It really embeds such great values from the get-go,” the Suits star told Deadline at the event. “I was a Girl Scout, my mom was a troupe leader, and I think the value of friendship, of being dedicated to a goal as you can see that in Cookie Queens, it’s so reflective of how these girls stick with something that’s important to them and don’t give up. And self belief is an integral value that comes with being a Girl Scout.”

Markle, whose favorite Girl Scouts cookie is Thin Mints, went on to say that selling cookies was more difficult for her without “the same perks and leverage of using social media and Venmo and QR codes that girls use these days.” “It was really about a charm and a smile and who doesn’t love a Girl Scout cookie? It’s a pretty easy sell,” Markle explained.

Although charm and a smile helped Markle when she was younger, she may have to familiarize herself with social media and the other digital tools if her daughter Lilibet joins the Girl Scouts one day. When asked if she was planning on letting the little girl join one day, Markle evaded the answer a bit, saying simply, “I think we’ll continue to explore whatever feels right.” That means she is definitely open to it!

She also said that this project, which she worked on with director Alysa Nahmias, will provide inspiration for young girls, even if they don’t join the Girl Scouts. “Alysa is a mom of a daughter, and I think for both of us working on this project it’s been incredibly special as parents, as mothers to be able to see something our girls will be able to enjoy and watch as well,” Markle told the outlet.

The As Ever founder, who also shares 6-year-old Prince Archie with Harry, recently revealed that her daughter is interested in her mom’s business ventures. In a December/January interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Markle shared that Lilibet likes to hang out with her while she works from home.

“My office is right by the kitchen, and I love that I can work from home. It’s a great luxury,” Markle said. She added that her daughter “comes and sits on my lap when I’m in the middle of the meeting, whether it’s about P and L for my brand or it’s about something creative.”

And Markle draws inspiration as an entrepreneur from her kids too. “I’m a mom with kids at that age where they are constantly learning something new,” she said. “I watch them face things that feel completely insurmountable every day. But you can remember and say, ‘I know it seems really hard right now, but trust me, that’s going to come so easily soon.’ I can give myself the same grace as a founder. There’s no such thing as perfect. I, too, get to make mistakes.”
