Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are still deep in their divorce proceedings, with the biggest hurdle being dividing their assets. While they have wildly different net worths and yearly salaries, they had a lot of shared asses that can cause an issue, especially since they didn’t sign a prenup. Insiders have claimed that Lopez is quite upset about potentially paying up Affleck, and is working hard to make sure that doesn’t happen. However, an expert recently revealed that their $68 million home may cause the biggest hurdle.
Entertainment attorney Tre Lovell of The Lovell Firm told The Mirror US via MSN about the situation, saying, “The primary issue of divorce will be community property, which is all property acquired during the tenure of the marriage absent certain exceptions. Purchasing a home during the marriage will constitute a community property asset.”
“When it comes time to value the asset and determine community property interest, factors such as appreciation, who put the bulk of the down payment down on the house, who made the monthly mortgage payments, who paid for renovations, etc., are factors that will be considered when doing a forensic valuation,” Lovell added. “Thus, if she put the most money down, it may complicate the process in terms of agreeing to a dividing money and assets that may be community property.”
So, their marital home can be a big issue, especially since they’ve had problems selling it off. An In Touch Weekly source also claimed earlier this year that they’re working to divide up quite a few assets.
They said, “They had no prenup, which complicates things, and what’s at stake are the assets they acquired together during their marriage — the $60 million house they’ve listed for $68 million, and the production company Artists Equity Ben formed with Matt Damon two years ago, which Jennifer also has a stake in.”
And as we said, Lopez isn’t too keen on paying up. Insiders recently told InTouch Weekly that Lopez would allegedly do a lot to avoid giving Affleck a check. “She already feels so screwed over by Ben. Writing him a massive check is just the final insult, and it’s not something she’s going to just hand over,” they said. “It’s become very clear now that there’s no getting out of paying Ben half of what she made during their marriage, which is obviously not sitting well with her.”
For those who don’t know, Lopez and Affleck met on the set of the film Gigli. They started dating soon after and got engaged by the end of 2002.
In 2003, they postponed their wedding and then broke up days before, due to the paparazzi and pressure they faced, and were broken up by 2004.
Then, in 2021, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance. A year later, they got engaged and married in a lavish ceremony. Then, after months of speculation, per TMZ, Lopez filed for divorce on Aug. 20, noting the date of separation is April 26, 2024.
