For fans who adore It Ends With Us, there might be some bad news, and it involves the ongoing feud between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. While the box office has been a huge success, garnering over $242 million globally, the sequel to the movie reportedly hangs in the balance.
The sequel to the first book by Colleen Hoover is called, It Starts With Us, and moviegoers are probably expecting a second film to be made to complete the story. Still, the state of Lively and director/co-star Baldoni’s working relationship hangs in the balance. “This is uncharted territory, and nobody has any idea of what a sequel could look like,” an inside told Variety. “There’s probably no world where these two will work together again.”
Fans first clued into the dispute when Baldoni didn’t make red-carpet appearances with the rest of the cast. They soon played internet detective and learned that not only did Lively unfollow Baldoni, but so did the rest of the cast. Then other little tidbits worked their way into the press with Lively revealing that her husband, Ryan Reynolds, rewrote a scene in the film without the knowledge of screenwriter Christy Hall. In turn, Baldoni hired crisis public relations manager Melissa Nathan of The Agency Group to deal with the fallout.
Hall talked to SheKnows ahead of the film’s release and sang Baldoni’s praises. “I feel like he loved this story from the beginning, and just regardless of what hat he’s wearing just was doing everything that he could to get it right,” she said. “I think he made Colleen a promise that he wouldn’t let her down, and he intended to keep that promise.” Yet Page Six sources painted a much different picture of Baldoni in an Aug. 9 report.
One insider claimed that as director, he created an “extremely difficult” environment for the cast and crew. “It’s not just Blake,” they continued. “None of the cast enjoyed working with Justin …They certainly didn’t talk to him at the premiere.” With no love lost between the two stars, it leaves the second film dangling in the wind without any satisfying conclusion. Baldoni’s production company, Wayfarer Studios owns the rights to the sequel, and he could move ahead without Lively and recast her role. She’s the bigger name between the two of them, and the studio might side with Lively in that case. It leaves everyone involved with the production with a major question mark surrounding the fate of It Starts With Us.
