As a former Olympic gold medalist, Shawn Johnson had a full-circle moment when she took her daughter Drew, 4, to the 2024 Paris Olympics. They got to attend the women’s gymnastics’ individual all-around competition on Aug. 1 together, and she just revealed her daughter’s cute reaction to the event (and its star athlete).
“She kept asking, ‘Mama, where’s The Best?'” Johnson told E! News. She figured out pretty quickly that her toddler was referring to Biles, who ended up winning gold at the event. “And it’s because I kept talking about Simone, how she’s the best. So instead of calling her Simone, she’s like, ‘Mama, where’s The Best?'”
Is that not the sweetest thing you’ve ever heard? I love how one former Team USA gymnast was lifting up a current Team USA gymnast so much that her daughter just started calling her “the Best” as a nickname. Women supporting other women is our favorite thing ever. (And we are totally calling Biles “the Best” from now on!)
Johnson was also proud of how well her daughter did at the event. She told the outlet that she wasn’t sure if her daughter “would last two minutes, 10 minutes or the whole time.” But she “was enthralled.” “She thought it was so special and it was. It was just a really cool full-circle moment,” Johnson added.
Johnson, who attended the event with her mom Teri Johnson and her husband Andrew East, also said that she doesn’t see her daughter competing in Olympics gymnastics in the future. “She liked to watch it, but she still is all gung ho on ice skating,” she admitted.
Previously, Johnson shared a video of her daughter playing on the benches of a hockey game, raising her arms and pointing her toe, pretending to skate. “Ice skating. It’s her THING,” Johnson wrote. “It’s so fun to see her little personality come out.”
In another clip, Drew does spins on the carpet in the lobby, practicing for a trip to the winter Olympics one day, perhaps? “I know literally ZERO about this sport hahahahaha,” Johnson wrote. “We are trying hard to learn for her!”
Luckily, they don’t have to worry about intense training for their kids any time soon. For now, Johnson and East are more focused on making memories with their three kids, Drew, Jett, 3, and Bear, 8 months. During their trip to Paris, East carried their three kids up 1,665 steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower, went to Paris Disneyland, and even visited the Team USA house doctors when Jett got sick. The family of five also visited London and Sorrento, Italy, on their European vacation.
When E! News asked their favorite part, Johnson joked, “Probably the chocolate croissants.” East added, “We went to one of the gymnastics competitions, but still the highlight was seeing Mickey [Mouse].”
“Some of our favorite times were outside of the Olympics,” Johnson said. “I will never forget there was one night where we had finished dinner and we were running around, playing chase in the yard, looking at the most beautiful sunset. We just got to be a family and experience a new place, which is really fun.”
It sounds like the perfect getaway!
