Hailey Bieber has been one of many celebrities who have (infuriatingly) been subjected to many baseless pregnancy rumors. In 2020, she called out the media for fueling the rumor mill, writing, “I’m not pregnant. So please stop writing false stories from your ‘sources’ and focus on what’s important a.k.a., the election,” on Instagram.
A year later, she made sure to get ahead of things “before anyone gets it twisted” by encouraging her husband Justin Bieber to change an Instagram caption that read “Mom and Dad” to “Dog Mom and Dad.”
And in 2023, the model shot down rumors for a third freakin’ time, saying it would be a lie if she said she “doesn’t give a sh*t” about the gossip. “There is something that’s disheartening about, damn, I can’t be bloated one time and not be pregnant?” she told GQ Hype.
“When there comes a day that that is true, you — you as in the internet — will be the last to know,” she declared.
And so we were shocked when she announced in May (in the dreamiest way!) that she and the “Baby” singer were expecting their first child together. We had expected a surprise announcement after a secret Baby Bieber was born, but Bieber told W Magazine that the privacy was taking a toll — even if it was easy enough to cover her slowly growing bump with big jackets.
“I probably could have hid it until the end,” she said. “But I didn’t enjoy the stress of not being able to enjoy my pregnancy outwardly. I felt like I was hiding this big secret, and it didn’t feel good. I wanted the freedom to go out and live my life.”
And we totally get where the Rhode founder is coming from. Be it a pregnancy or other life events, sometimes there’s a level of peace that comes with sharing that information. And! Guess what! Women can decide to change their minds about any damn thing at any damn time.
So what if she said the masses would be the last to know? That statement wasn’t binding and, at six months pregnant, it’s very possible we really were the last to know. It’s possible her loved ones had already been fussing over the mom-to-be.
In the increasingly candid interview, Bieber admitted that she has questioned what it will mean to expand her family.
“In the beginning [of pregnancy], it was super emotional for me. Like, ‘I love this human so much. How can I possibly bring someone else into this?’” she said. “I’m trying to soak in these days of it being Justin and me, just the two of us.”
Because things change when a baby enters the picture. (Thanks, Captain Obvious!) Even though you’re so overwhelmingly in love with this little bundle of joy, the sleep deprivation and nonexistent date nights can put a strain on even the strongest of marriages. As celebrities like Heather Rae El Moussa have said, there’s a learning curve!
Right now, Bieber is learning to follow Baby Bieber’s lead. Amid the ongoing bouts of morning sickness — “I don’t know why they call it that because it lasts all day long; we need to change the name” — she tries to stick to a high-protein diet. Sure, her fridge might be stocked with “lots of eggs, chicken, and steak,” but her little one gets the final say at mealtime.
“I just listen to whatever the baby wants,” she said. “If the baby wants pizza one day, we’re doing pizza.”
In May, Bieber revealed on her Instagram Story that her baby wanted a downright shocking snack: pickles topped with egg salad and hot sauce. “Currently my biggest craving ???? ???? ???? ???? ,” she wrote over a photo of the questionable culinary combination. ” … And no, you’re not allowed to judge!!”
Correct! You’re not allowed to judge when a pregnant person wants pickles topped with egg salad and hot sauce (even if it makes you queasy). You’re not allowed to judge if and when they share the news of their pregnancy. And you’re not allowed to judge if they’re worried about what a baby means for their marriage.
Unfortunately, we know that the mom shamers will judge anything and everything, but we hope that Bieber can block out the noise as she approaches her due date.
These celebs were quick to shut down pregnancy speculation.
