While we all adore Kerry Washington and her eye-grabbing characters on both TV and film, we also love her stance on her family. Despite being such a huge star, she and her husband Nnamdi Asomugha have been very protective of their children, and rarely, if ever, talk about them in public. In fact, until recently, we didn’t even know their names!
But now, Washington recently opened up about how that’s been slowly changing.
In an interview with PEOPLE while promoting UnPrisoned at the American Black Film Festival, Washington talked about how she and Asomugha made their children’s privacy their number one priority. But now? They’re a bit more lenient about it.
She said they’re “definitely not as protective as we used to be.” She laughed, “They’re not, like, locked in a dungeon. They do, you know, come to set, we go places, we do things. We do feel like we want to give them agency to engage in a public life in the way they want to, because this is what we do. We’ve chosen to be athletes and artists, and that’s our choice. But we want to let them be kids.”
Washington also went on to say how privacy is the cornerstone of keeping her marriage healthy, and her kids happy.
“I think just from the very beginning, Nnamdi and I have been really protective of our partnership and our relationship, because we wanted it to belong to us…” she said in the same interview. “And I think in many ways, we just want to give our kids that same opportunity to define a life for themselves and to enter the public space in their own way.”
For those who don’t know, Washington and Asomugha first met back in 2009, and within four years, they tied the knot.
Since then, they’ve welcomed two children named Caleb, born in Oct 2016, and Isabelle, born in April 2020. Washington is also the stepmother to Asomugha’s daughter from a previous relationship.
