President-elect Donald Trump has launched a phone campaign to urge Republican senators to confirm embattled Florida Republican Matt Gaetz as his next attorney general, according to a report.
Trump has called senators including Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Axios reported Monday. Another senator, who wasn't named, also confirmed Trump had called them.
"He clearly wants Matt Gaetz," Cramer told the news outlet. "He believes Matt Gaetz is the one person who will have the fearlessness and ferociousness, really, to do what needs doing at the Department of Justice."
Cramer added: "And he's a pretty persuasive guy."

Gaetz faces a slew of series allegations including sexual misconduct with an underage girl. Gaetz was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which planned to vote on whether to release the results of its report Friday before Gaetz resigned from his seat.
A witness testified that she saw Gaetz involved in sexual activities with a 17-year-old girl at a party in 2017.
The ethics inquiry also included accusations of drug use and drug-fueled sex parties, as well as allegations of bribery and campaign finance violations.
Gaetz has denied all the allegations. A Justice Department investigation ended with no charges filed against him.
