Conservative commentator Matt Lewis lamented on the latest episode of his podcast with Washington Monthly's Bill Scher about how his longtime Republican Party has devolved into a cult of "weird" people who now set the agenda and have chase any reasonable, serious people out of the fold.
This came as they discussed the fact that former President Donald Trump has been toying with the idea of replacing Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, already himself a bit of a fringe figure, with conspiracy theorist and former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his ticket.
"I think he was fascinated by the idea of Kennedy on his ticket," said Scher.
"Keep in mind that RFK Jr. is against fracking, keep in mind he's called the NRA something like a terrorist organization or something to that effect, he has been very critical of the NRA. Obviously he has radical environmentalist positions. And he's done weird stuff to animals as well, right?" said Lewis, a longtime conservative critic of the former president.

"Nothing wrong with being a hunter, but it is weird to chainsaw a whale head, which apparently violates several laws, and what he did with the bear is obviously super weird," agreed Scher. "So I think that Trump has walked into the weird narrative that Democrats have laid out for them ... I would not expect it to work for him numerically as he expects." He added that there's really not a strategic benefit to pursuing Kennedy voters, as there aren't that many of them and most of them hate Trump as much as Harris.
"Well, again, it is weird that the Republican Party, rather than it being Paul Ryan being there and Mitt Romney being there and maybe honoring John McCain and Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush being there, that it's Elon Musk, who took a bunch of money from Barack Obama to build up his businesses, who fathered God knows how many kids ... these are weird people," said Lewis. "RFK Jr., didn't he have a diary about all of his conquests or something? These are not — they're not sending their best."
"Why is it that all the bad people — Kanye West is attracted now to Trump. What happened?" Lewis added. "We used to be the — you know, I know there've always been cranks and weirdos, but the mainstream of the Republican Party used to be a lot of boring establishment types, and devout religious people. And now it is Roseanne Barr, man."
