Former President Donald Trump's campaign rally in South Florida was a sign that his rants are getting even more bizarre than ever, wrote Richard Luscombe for The Guardian after witnessing the event.
In addition to all of his usual greatest hits, like falsely claiming the U.S. is no longer energy independent and that the U.S. military is going to be forced to adopt electric tanks, Trump offered a new claim about inflation under President Joe Biden.
The rally, wrote Luscombe, "touched on the surreal. Biden, he insisted, had raised the price of bacon four-fold. 'We don’t eat bacon anymore,' Trump said."
This is not true. Bacon prices in the last full year of Trump's presidency averaged $5.58 per pound, peaked at $7.31 per pound in 2022, and at the last monthly statistics stood at $6.82 per pound. Moreover, wages have been rising faster than prices for over a year, so on a purchasing power basis, bacon is at more or less the same price it was for most of the Trump presidency.

The former president's rally, held at his Doral golf club, was notable for Trump challenging Biden to another debate with "no moderators" and "no holds barred," as well as an 18-round golf course that would end with him giving $1 million to the charity of Biden's choice if Biden defeated him.
Biden, who is spending much of this week on a summit at NATO, reacted dismissively to the challenge, with his campaign proclaiming that "Donald Trump hasn't been seen in public for 12 days, now he's inviting fictional serial killers to dinner, teasing lil' Marco Rubio, praising Project 2025 architect Tom Homan, and challenging the President of the United States to golf."
