UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) – Two young teenagers were arrested related to an attack involving former New York Gov. David Paterson, the NYPD announced Saturday.
The two teens, ages 12 and 13, were charged with gang assault after Friday’s attack near Second Avenue and East 96th Street, police said.
The teenagers are accused of getting into an argument with Paterson, 70, and his stepson, 20, before striking them in the face and body, police said. Paterson had injuries on his face and head and was taken to an area hospital. His stepson was also taken to an area hospital, police said.
The suspected attackers had a “previous interaction” with Paterson’s stepson before the attack, according to a spokesperson for the former governor.
“Governor Paterson and his stepson were attacked this evening while taking a walk around the block near their home by some individuals that had a previous interaction with his stepson,” said the spokesperson. “They both suffered some injuries but were able to fight off their attackers.”
But by the next day, Paterson and his stepson were discharged from the hospital and back to focusing on the Mets.
“The Governor's only request is that people refrain from attempting to use an unfortunate act of violence for their own personal or political gain,” said the spokesperson.
Police are still searching for more people involved in the attack. The NYPD originally said five young men were involved.
