Ranger Suárez (low back soreness)
Status: 15-day injured list
Suárez was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 27 with low back soreness, retroactive to July 24.
He is making progress, but don’t expect a return during the Marlins/Nationals homestand. He threw 36 pitches in a two-inning simulated game in Arizona on Thursday, Aug. 8, according to MLB.com. The Phillies would still like to see him throw live batting practice — which could happen on Sunday, Aug. 11 — and possibly go out on a short rehab stint. That will likely push his eventual return to the rotation until the Braves/Royals roadtrip. (Last Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Aug. 9)
Austin Hays (hamstring injury)
Status: TBD
Hays was removed from the Wednesday, Aug. 7 game against the Dodgers in the top of the third after he appeared to tweak his hamstring running down the first base line.
The Phillies won’t make a final decision until all tests are in, but Thomson did tell reporters in Arizona, including NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Corey Seidman, that Hays’ injury is similar to what Marsh experienced in June, meaning he will likely go on the 10-day IL and miss a short amount of time. Taijuan Walker (right index finger inflammation)
Status: 15-day injured list; Likely to return on Aug. 13 vs. Marlins
Walker made his second rehab appearance for Double-A Reading on Wednesday, Aug. 7 going five innings and holding the Akron RubberDucks to two hits and one run. Walker threw 60 total pitches, 40 of them for strikes. He struck out three batters and didn’t allow any walks. It appears Walker is on track to return to the rotation on Aug. 13 against the Marlins, according to MLB.com. (Last Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Aug. 9)
Dylan Covey (right shoulder strain)
Status: 60-day injured list; Currently on rehab assignment
As of Aug. 9, Covey has made three rehab appearances for Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. His last came on Aug. 4, when he allowed one earned run over three innings for Reading against Hartford. (Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on Aug. 9)
Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
Status: 15-day injured list, out 6-8 weeks
Turnbull will be out until August with a right lat strain. He was lifted from his start against the Detroit Tigers after three innings on June 26 with right shoulder soreness. He expressed optimism about his status to reporters in Detroit after the game, but testing revealed a more significant injury.
According to NBC Sports Philadelphia‘s Corey Seidman, the Phillies plan to utilize Turnbull out of the bullpen when he returns, relaying a quote from manager Rob Thomson who says “we’ll stretch him out as much as we can but it would be tough to get him to 100 pitches.”
As for where Turnbull is in his rehab, Seidman says that the plan is Turnbull will “get back on a mound this week.” (Last Updated by Tim Kelly on Aug. 7)
Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)

Painter is throwing 25-pitch bullpens every Tuesday and Friday. He’s only throwing fastballs and changeups currently. Thomson didn’t rule out the 21-year-old pitching in simulated games — which are a controlled setting — before the end of the year.
