Phillies Injury Updates: Cristian Pache to undergo elbow surgery

The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

• Cristian Pache (right elbow irritation)
• Status: 10-day injured list
• Cristian Pache will require surgery on his elbow due to complications from a screw inserted to correct a previous injury, according to manager Rob Thomson. He’ll miss a few weeks. The Phillies placed Pache on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 11, and called up No. 5 overall prospect Johan Rojas to take his place. (Last Updated July 16) — Tim Kelly and Ty Daubert

• Edmundo Sosa
• Status: Active
• Sosa left Saturday night’s game after getting hit in the hand and getting a leg cramp while running the bases. He’s doing fine and will be on the bench on Sunday. (Last Updated July 16) — Ty Daubert

• Seranthony Domínguez (left oblique strain)
• Status: 15-day injured list
• Domínguez “felt good” after a bullpen session on July 14. While Thomson acknowledged that the hard-throwing righty was “a little bit erratic” at the beginning of his bullpen, he settled down and finished well.
• He’ll throw a live batting practice on Tuesday. (Last Updated July 16) — Ty Daubert

• Jose Alvarado (left elbow inflammation)
• Status: 15-day injured list
• The Phillies placed Alvarado on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation, retroactive to July 7. It’s the second stint on the IL this season for the hard-throwing reliever, who missed over a month earlier this campaign as he dealt with inflammation in the same elbow. RHP Andrew Bellatti was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Alvarado’s place.
• Alvarado is still not throwing but is feeling “much better,” according to Thomson. (Last Updated July 16) — Ty Daubert

• Andrew Painter (right UCL sprain) 
• Status: 60-day MiLB injured list 
• Rob Thomson told reporters in Miami on July 8 that tests results showed healing in Andrew Painter’s right elbow. The Phillies paused Painter’s throwing program and ordered additional testing after the right-hander reported discomfort following a July 6 bullpen session.
• Painter has not yet resumed his throwing program, per Thomson. He’s still dealing with the discomfort in his elbow. (Last Updated July 16) — Ty Daubert

• Rhys Hoskins (torn ACL)
• Status: 60-day injured list — Out for 7-9 months
• The Phillies first baseman underwent successful surgery the morning of Thursday, March 30. The club officially announced that his recovery timeline is seven to nine months. Hoskins tore his ACL while trying to field a ground ball during spring training.
• Hoskins ran on the outfield prior to the series-opener against the San Diego Padres on July 14. It’s not the first time that Hoskins has run since his surgery, but he did acknowledge that it’s a “milestone” in the sense that he hadn’t previously run with this pace. The 30-year-old didn’t get into whether he’s ahead of schedule, but did say that he believes he’s “right on pace.” (Last Updated on July 14) — Tim Kelly

• Josh Harrison (right wrist contusion)
• Status: 10-day injured list
• The Phillies announced on Wednesday that Harrison has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist contusion. The move is retroactive to July 9, when Harrison jammed the wrist sliding into a base in Miami.
• A corresponding move has not yet been announced by the team, but the 26th spot on the active roster will be filled before the second half kicks off against the San Diego Padres on Friday. (Last Updated July 12) — Nathan Ackerman

• Noah Song (low back strain)
• Status: MLB 60-day injured list — Began rehab assignment with Low-A Clearwater on June 28, transferred to Double-A Reading on July 12.
• Song’s rehab assignment was transferred to Double-A Reading on Wednesday, the Phillies announced. The righty allowed four hits, a run and five walks on seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings with Clearwater.
• Song, a Rule 5 pick, has to spend at least 90 days on the Phillies active roster in order for the team to have the ability to option him to the minor leagues next year. A source told the Inquirer’s Scott Lauber that Song’s 90-day minimum stint on the active roster can spill over to next season. Once Song hits 90 days, he is eligible to be optioned to the minor leagues. If the Phillies bring him up to the majors and need to take him off the roster before he hits 90 days on the active roster, Song will be placed on waivers. If he clears, the Phillies are required to offer him back to the Red Sox for $50,000. (Last Updated July 12) — Nathan Ackerman
