MONTPELIER, Vt. (NEWS10) -- Vermont's cannabis regulatory panel has put all new retail license applications on pause. Board members said the decision is because of concerns that the market is oversaturated in some areas.
There are about 80 retail locations but only about 30 percent of towns in the state have opted in to allow sales. Officials said they hope the pause in applications will allow towns to reconsider sales and lead to better geographic distribution.
"We are going to put a temporary pause on new retail applications coming in, and while we establish these rules around retail citing, then we'll open it back up and the new applications that we get will all have to play by a different map," Vermont Cannabis Control Board Chair James Pepper said.
The pause is expected to last four to six months.
