It was an eventful first six days of training camp for the New England Patriots, and fans started to get concerned about Drake Maye.
The 2024 third-overall pick flashed his arm talent, but he struggled to put up consistent production in padded practice compared to Jacoby Brissett, who was deemed the starting quarterback by head coach Jerod Mayo.
Fans hoped to see more from Maye to the point where he would win the starting job, and the fact that things weren’t progressing quickly had supporters wondering if Maye was the guy.
NESN’s George Balekji and Travis Thomas debated who should be the starter on the latest edition of “Foxboro Rush” on Wednesday. Thomas still is a believer in Maye, but Balekji believes the first six days of training camp told the true story of the quarterback room.
“Understand that I want Drake Maye to work out, but it’s a process and it’s a situation,” Balekji told Thomas. “And Jacoby Brissett right now is a better pro quarterback. It’s not a matter of is Jacoby Brissett better than Drake Maye. The capabilities of throwing the football, Drake Maye is better.
“Who is the best professional quarterback in the game that keeps your offense on time, keeps your offense on schedule, doesn’t lose games and takes care of the football? That’s Jacoby Brissett. Once Drake Maye shows that, then he will be the starter. It’s not Jacoby against Drake. It’s Drake Maye against himself. But right now, this is Jacoby Brissett putting together six days where he is better than Drake Maye.”
