Two players who cracked the Red Sox’s Opening Day roster might be on the verge of leaving the organization.
Boston designated Reese McGuire and Chase Anderson for assignment Sunday, the club announced a few hours before its series finale against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. The moves were revealed in a team announcement that also included the active roster additions of James Paxton and Danny Jansen, as well as the waiver pickup of Yohan Ramírez.
The Red Sox acquired McGuire in a trade with the Chicago White Sox last August. The veteran catcher played in 160 games for Boston between the end of last year’s campaign and the first four months of this season. McGuire hit .264 over that span with seven home runs and 46 RBIs.
The writing of McGuire’s exit hit the wall Saturday when Boston acquired Jansen in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. The newcomer, who will bat seventh as the Red Sox’s designated hitter Sunday night, figures to work with Connor Wong as the club’s catching tandem for the remainder of the season.
Boston signed Anderson in late March after he was released from his minor-league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran right-hander became a valuable innings-eater for the Red Sox, who sent him out for 52 frames before he was DFA’d. Anderson’s ERA as of Sunday was 4.85, which was inflated Saturday when he allowed two runs and took a loss against the Yankees.
More roster moves could be on the horizon for Boston, as the trade deadline is set for Tuesday evening.
