The Mets entered Toronto with a new streak on their minds.
The old one had been broken by the Reds in the home finale, and a new streak was needed with the National League Wild Card coming down to the wire.
Tylor Megill got the ball for the Mets, and when the club needed a strong performance, he shoved. The righty was dominant across the border. He shut out the Blue Jays lineup, striking out nine batters across six innings.
In surprising fashion, Megill also limited base runners. He only walked two batters and allowed one hit, leaving the mound with a 1-0 lead intact.
It was a stark difference from his previous 11 starts this year, where he was allowing 12 base runners per nine innings. It also got the Mets back in the win column and in sole possession of the third Wild Card spot—a game ahead of the Atlanta Braves, who lost to the Reds Monday night.
“Just wanted to go out and compete,” Megill said. “Give the team the best chance to win tonight. Threw the ball great tonight. Felt good, everything was working.”
Unfortunately for Megill, he didn’t earn the win for his strong start. The Mets’ bullpen gave the Jays the lead in the seventh, preventing Megill from earning the W.
Still, Megill showed what he’s capable of when he prevents base runners. His 98 mile per hour sinker was a weapon against the Blue Jays and it led to his first scoreless start since May 28. If Megill continues this success in the rotation, the Mets will be in a great spot in September. Paul Blackburn and Kodai Senga are still returning from injury and the Mets need another starter in the pennant chase.
