A 21-year-old social media influencer has died after allegedly downing a whole bottle of whiskey as part of a paid dare on Boxing Day in Thailand.
Thanakarn Kanthee, from the capital city of Bangkok, was offered £700 as a prize to chug 350ml of whiskey at a party.
Known as ‘Bank Leicester’, he was known for taking on challenges to earn money to support his family.
A video taken at a party in the town of Chanthaburi shows people laughing and cheering him on to continue drinking.
It was only moments after downing the alcohol that Thanakarn started to feel unwell and began to vomit.
What was supposed to be a just a dare ended in tragedy as he collapsed to the floor.
He was rushed to the hospital, but nothing could be done to save him and he was pronounced dead at around 3.40am.
Thanakarn had lived with his grandmother since he was only two months old.
He sold garlands at a flea market from the age of seven, so that he could provide for himself and his grandmother.
He performed improvised rap songs to attract buyers and had been seen in several videos accepting paid challenges to drink alcohol in exchange for money, the Bangkok Post reported.
One Facebook page showed some partygoers laughing as rescuers rushed Thanakarn to an ambulance on a stretcher.
In the wake of his death, social media activist Guntouch Pongpaiboonwet has offered to advocate for his family.
‘People were quick to make content and have fun with it, but when it came to taking responsibility, not a single soul dared step up,’ Guntouch said.
Police today arrested two social media influencers in Chanthaburi and Pathum in connection with his death.
