Seventy five ready-meal products are being recalled due to fears 10,000,000lbs of meat could be contaminated with listeria.
The pre-cooked red meat and poultry products were manufactured by US manufacturers BrucePac, which issued the recall yesterday.
Routine testing found evidence of Listeria monocytogenes in its poultry meals, according to the US’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The bacteria can cause a listeriosis infection if the affected food is eaten.
The FSIS has released the names of all 75 products, which can be seen below.
The meals, which carry a best before date of June 18, 2025 and October 8, 2025 have been sold in restaurants, institutions and shops across the US.
The FSIS has reported no illnesses or deaths linked to the meals, according to the Daily Mail.
The major recall comes after Boar’s Head, a US firm that produces delicatessen meat and cheese products, recalled 3.2million kg of meat in July because of a listeria contamination.
The outbreak left two people dead and at least 13 seriously ill.
It is not clear how the ready-to-eat BrucePac meals were contaminated, but the bacteria could have entered the factory on something like an improperly treated chicken breast.
During processing, the bacteria can then get onto machines, which in turn can spread it to other products.
Possible symptoms for those who become infected include fever, chills, headache, vomiting and diarrhea within one to four weeks of infection.
Listeria infections can be particularly serious for elderly people, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.
Others are more likely to experience a short illness that lasts for a few days.
In the US around 1,600 people are infected with listeria every year and about 260 people die from it.
In the UK there were 177 listeriosis cases last year, which is the highest since 2016, when there were 180 infections.
Meanwhile, there were 32 listeria related death, not including those associated with pregnancy, reports Food Safety News.
In its BruceCap recall notice, the FSIS said: ‘FSIS is concerned that some product may be available for use in restaurants, institutions and other establishments.
‘These… may be on store shelves or in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.
‘Restaurants, institutions and other establishments are urged not to serve or use these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.’
